Biography

Mei’s Father (芽衣の父親) is a minor but impactful supporting character in Tōgen Anki. Though he only appears briefly in the manga, his actions and tragic fate heavily influence Mei’s emotional development and perspective throughout the series.

Background:
Not much is known about Mei’s Father before the events of the story. He lived with his family in Kyoto, raising Mei alongside her mother. Like many humans in the Tōgen Anki world, he was aware of the ongoing conflict between humans and Oni but tried to protect his daughter from that harsh reality for as long as possible.

Role in the Story:
During the Kyoto incident, Mei’s family became caught in the violent clash between the Oni and Momotarō forces. As chaos spread through their district, Mei’s parents acted selflessly to secure her safety. Her father shielded her from the initial attack, ensuring she could escape even as the situation worsened.

Tragically, he was later discovered among the casualties of the raid—his body having been manipulated and controlled by the enemy forces after death. This shocking moment deeply scarred Mei, driving much of her later fear, anger, and motivation to grow stronger. His death also established the emotional weight behind Mei’s interactions with other characters such as Shiki Ichinose.

Personality:
Mei’s father was a gentle and kind-hearted man, known for his protective nature and strong sense of family. Despite the growing hostility around him, he believed in compassion and peace, choosing to protect rather than fight. His courage in the face of certain death reflected the human resilience central to Tōgen Anki’s themes.

Legacy:
Though only appearing in flashbacks and memories, Mei’s father remains a vital figure in her backstory. His death serves as a constant reminder of what was lost to the war between Oni and Momotarō. Through Mei’s journey, his sacrifice symbolizes the price of conflict and the importance of preserving one’s humanity even amid destruction.

Status Non-combatant / Civilian Power Manifestation None confirmed on-screen Combat Skill Not demonstrated Notable Feat Prioritized Mei’s safety during the Kyoto incident

Narrative Impact: his death—and the desecration/manipulation of his body by enemy forces—acts as a catalyst for Mei’s trauma, resolve, and later growth. In that sense, his “power” in the story is the emotional momentum it gives to Mei’s character arc.

  • No Oni/Blood arts recorded.
  • No weapon proficiency established.
  • Serves as a thematic anchor for civilian cost of the war.

Update hook: If later chapters or anime episodes reveal hidden skills in flashbacks, replace the “None confirmed” lines above with the new technique name, trigger, and first appearance chapter/episode.
