Ken appears in the first season as a young spirit wandering the streets of Karakura Town. Unlike most Pluses (wholesome souls) who move on quickly, Ken remains tethered to the living world because he is waiting for his mother to return. He is often seen crouching near a vending machine, appearing sad and lonely.

Ichigo Kurosaki encounters the boy and attempts to perform a Konso (Soul Burial) to send him to the Soul Society. Ken initially resists, afraid of leaving his spot and missing his mother. However, a Hollow begins to stalk him, sensing his spiritual pressure. Ichigo steps in to defend the boy, destroying the monster before it can devour him.

After being saved, Ken accepts his fate. Ichigo reassures him that he will be safe in the Soul Society and might even find his family there. With a final thank you, Ken allows Ichigo to tap his forehead with the hilt of Zangetsu, peacefully fading away as he crosses over to the afterlife.
