When the population begins dying from Amber Lead Syndrome, he correctly identifies the cause as heavy metal poisoning rather than a contagious disease. He stays behind in the quarantined city after the royal family flees, working tirelessly in his laboratory to find a treatment for the dying citizens. He confronts the misinformation spread by the World Government, arguing that the illness is not infectious and pleading for medical supplies rather than isolation.

During the purge authorized by neighboring nations to wipe out the city, he attempts to secure the safety of his children. He instructs Law to take his sick sister and hide, hoping to spare them from the invading ground troops. Soldiers storm the hospital shortly after, and he is gunned down alongside his wife, leaving his son to discover their bodies amidst the burning ruins of the medical facility.
