Captain John was a legendary pirate who gained infamy as a member of the notorious Rocks Pirates, serving alongside figures like Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom. In the main storyline, he appears during the Thriller Bark arc as a General Zombie raised by Gecko Moria. Even in his undead state, he retained his heavy drinking habits, often seen carrying a bottle of alcohol rather than a weapon.

his body is riddled with stab wounds, and he carries two swords stuck through his torso. While alive, he was known for hoarding a massive fortune. He met his end when his own crew mutinied and stabbed him to death for refusing to share his treasure with them. As a zombie, he served as a commander for Moria's forces until the shadows were eventually released.

Although John is long dead, his legacy drives a significant subplot in the current era. His fabled "Captain John's Treasure" has been the primary obsession of Buggy the Clown for most of the series. Luffy unknowingly found the marker for this treasure—a glass armband—at Thriller Bark and gave it to Buggy in Impel Down. While Buggy has since risen to the status of Emperor and formed the Cross Guild, the capital from John's hidden fortune was originally intended to fund his operations.
