Gordon, Dwhite

A large, physically imposing Western man with a weathered face, completely bald and almost never seen without dark rectangular sunglasses. Dresses in expensive but casual attire — open-collared shirts and dark leather or suit jackets.

Authoritative, greedy, and pragmatic, with the ruthless discipline needed to run a major criminal organization for over two decades. He sees the Death Note purely as the ultimate extortion tool, not as any kind of “justice,” and treats the supernatural with cold, transactional curiosity rather than fear.

Operating out of Las Vegas under the alias Rod Ross, Gordon built and led his syndicate from roughly 1987 onward, running it out of a headquarters on Gray Street.

In 2009, Mello infiltrates Gordon’s syndicate and rises fast enough that Gordon accepts him as a tactical advisor, letting him steer the plan to acquire a Death Note. Gordon personally oversees the kidnapping of Sayu Yagami and the resulting exchange with the Task Force in the Los Angeles desert. Once the notebook is in hand, Gordon and his crew are confronted by its original owner, the Shinigami Sidoh — Gordon stays composed enough to offer him chocolate to secure his cooperation, and learns from him that the notebook’s “13-day rule” is fake. Near eventually traces Gordon’s identity and location and passes it to Light, acting as L; on November 10, 2009, at 11:59 PM, Light writes both his names — Dwight Gordon and Rod Ross — into the Death Note. He dies of a heart attack in his own hideout.

The Ransom of Sayu Yagami (Ch. 60–64)

Gordon directs the extortion of a Death Note from Soichiro Yagami using Sayu as a hostage — a success that briefly hands a criminal organization control of the notebook.

The Syndicate Purge (Ch. 71)

Once identified by Near, Gordon is executed by Kira along with the rest of the mafia’s leadership, ending the syndicate’s hold on the notebook for good.

Mello

Originally his advisor, Mello effectively becomes the syndicate’s real leader — a shift Gordon tolerates purely because Mello gets results.

His loyal subordinate and the official “owner” of the Death Note within the syndicate.

His right-hand man and trusted operative.

Sidoh

The Shinigami he ends up hosting, using him as a source of information about the notebook’s rules.

His executioner, who treats Gordon and his entire syndicate as an obstacle to remove.

• The first character in the series shown discovering that Shinigami besides Ryuk have human-world food cravings — he uses chocolate to win Sidoh over.
