Vergo

ヴェルゴ

Supporting One Piece

Vergo is a Marine Vice Admiral and Commander of G-5, a notorious naval base in the New World — and, secretly, the most senior executive of the Donquixote Family, reporting directly to Donquixote Doflamingo ("Joker"). Known as the "Bamboo Demon," he was the secondary antagonist of the Punk Hazard Arc, where his double life and combat skill threatened the Straw Hat Pirates, the G-5 Marines, and Trafalgar Law alike. From inside the Navy, he protected Doflamingo's S.A.D. production and covered up the abductions of children for Caesar Clown's experiments.

Physical Build

Vergo is a tall, muscular man with a stoic expression and short black hair, square-cut sideburns connecting to his beard, and near-permanent dark, rectangular sunglasses. A recurring visual gag has food — a hamburger patty, a fried egg, fries, even a spoon — stuck to his cheek without him noticing.

Clothing

He typically wears a high-collared, quilted white jacket over a business suit and tie, fitting his rank, though he discards the coat in combat to reveal his muscular frame.

Flashbacks to 13 years earlier show a younger Vergo with the same hair and sideburns, wearing a different suit during his time on Minion Island.

Vergo is shrewd, duplicitous, and highly manipulative. Among the G-5 Marines he plays an "amiable" and "honorable" commander they practically worship, while in truth he's a cold-blooded killer who views his subordinates as expendable. He demands absolute respect, repeatedly correcting Trafalgar Law to call him "Vergo-san." Despite his meticulous, professional exterior, he's a remarkably messy eater, oblivious to the food stuck to his own face. He trusts no one — he planted Monet to monitor Caesar Clown — and his loyalty to Doflamingo is absolute, to the point of slaughtering former comrades to protect his cover.

Fifteen years before the present, Vergo enlisted in the Navy on Doflamingo's orders as a deep-cover agent, before his pirate ties became public knowledge, and climbed the ranks through professional excellence and calculated deception. Thirteen years ago, while hunting for the Op-Op Fruit, he was stationed on a scout ship near Minion Island, where he encountered a young Trafalgar Law and the dying Donquixote Rocinante (Corazon). Realizing Rocinante had betrayed the family, Vergo brutally beat them both and intercepted a top-secret report meant for the Navy that listed Doflamingo's known associates. He later requested a transfer to G-5, eventually rising to Vice Admiral and commander of the base, using his position to mislabel Caesar Clown's child abductions as "sailing accidents."

The Ambush

Vergo arrived at Punk Hazard's third laboratory and instantly incapacitated Trafalgar Law by exploiting Law's own heart, which Caesar was holding, before easily defeating Vice Admiral Smoker and the Straw Hats.

The Execution Plot

He imprisoned Law, Luffy, Robin, Franky, Smoker, and Tashigi in a Sea Prism Stone cage, planning to kill them with the "Land of the Dead" gas.

Conflict in the Lab

After the prisoners escaped, Vergo began systematically hunting down every witness, briefly clashing with Sanji in a hallway and cracking his shin before the gas began flooding the area.

The S.A.D. Room Battle

Vergo reached the S.A.D. manufacturing room to stop Law and faced Smoker in a high-stakes fight; Smoker's smoke powers created the distraction Law needed to reclaim his heart.

Final Defeat

Once Law had his heart back, Vergo raised full-body Armament Haki to shield himself, but Law's upgraded Op-Op powers cut straight through him, the S.A.D. tanks, and the entire laboratory.

Armament Haki Mastery

Vergo is a renowned master of Armament Haki, able to harden his entire body to a degree that makes him impervious to standard attacks and capable of shattering steel.

Demon Bamboo (Oni-Take)

His signature style: imbuing a simple bamboo staff with Haki until it's harder than any blade, and firing compressed-air strikes from it that cause massive explosions.

Rokushiki

He's proficient in the Navy's Six Powers, including Moon Walk for high-speed flight, Finger Pistol, and Iron Body.

Physical Prowess

Even without Haki he has monstrous strength, capable of downing a giant G-5 marine or cracking Sanji's bones with a single kick.

He's also a skilled spy, having deceived the entire Navy for fifteen years — though his reliance on Armament Haki's durability ultimately proved fatal against Law's Op-Op Fruit.

Vergo vs. Rocinante and Law

Vergo intercepted the two traitors on Minion Island, winning decisively and leaving Rocinante for dead.

Vergo vs. Law and Smoker

Vergo neutralized Law instantly by exploiting his stolen heart, easily winning the encounter.

Vergo vs. Sanji

Sanji tried to defend Tashigi, but the fight was cut short by the spreading gas — Vergo came away unscathed while Sanji's leg was injured.

Vergo vs. Vice Admiral Smoker

Smoker fought to reclaim Law's heart and was defeated, but succeeded in getting the heart back to Law.

Vergo vs. Trafalgar Law

A duel to the death in the S.A.D. room. Law sliced Vergo into pieces and left him scattered across the exploding laboratory, seemingly ending his life.

Donquixote Doflamingo

His master and lifelong comrade — one of the few who addresses him by name rather than "Young Master."

Trafalgar Law

A former subordinate whom Vergo traumatized in childhood; he views Law's rise as an insult and demands to be called "-san."

Vice Admiral Smoker

A Navy rival who grew suspicious of Vergo's record, leading to their final confrontation.

Donquixote Rocinante

A "brother" in the family whose betrayal Vergo discovered and punished brutally.

Caesar Clown

A business partner Vergo secretly monitored and distrusted.

“That's Mr. Vergo to you. Learn your place.” — Chapter 672
“Your men outside will be given to Caesar for his plans... it'll go into the books as an accident.” — Chapter 673
“Against an opponent with superior Haki... expanding your volume only makes for a bigger target!!” — Chapter 690, to Smoker

Dietary Habit: His favorite food is hamburgers, which routinely end up stuck to his face.

Ranking: Vergo placed #64 in the 5th Character Popularity Poll.

Author's Note: Oda confirmed in an SBS that Vergo could imbue even his penis with Armament Haki.

Haki Specialization: Vergo and Smoker were the Navy's go-to examples for illustrating the difference between Haki users who "expand" versus those who "harden."
