Vista, known as "Flower Sword" Vista, is the Fifth Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates and one of the crew’s most senior and physically imposing members. He fought in the Paramount War at Marineford as part of the rescue mission for Portgaz D. Ace, and his swordsmanship is respected enough that even Dracule Mihawk, the world’s strongest swordsman, said only a fool would not know his name. After Edward Newgate’s death, Vista remained a central figure among the crew’s remnants and fought in the "Payback War" against the Blackbeard Pirates.
Vista is tall and muscular, with a broad chest and dark skin.
Physical Features
He has short black hair and a distinctive long black mustache that curls upward at the ends.
Clothing
He wears a black top hat and a dark blue or black cape, with a shirt in a diamond stripe pattern left partly open at the chest.
Weaponry
He dual-wields two sabers sheathed at his hips.
As a Child
An SBS flashback shows him training intensely with a practice sword even as a boy, already wearing a similar hairstyle and the same fierce determination.
Vista is loyal, modest, and fearless. Like the other division commanders, he sees Edward Newgate as a father figure and will face any threat to protect his crew. He stays humble in a fight, often smiling even against the world’s most dangerous opponents, and holds a strong sense of swordsman’s honor, shown in his respectful duel with Mihawk. As a commander he holds real authority over the crew’s lower ranks, but he is protective and almost paternal toward allies like Monkey D. Luffy.
Vista’s origins are unrecorded, but he began training in swordsmanship as a child. He has been with the Whitebeard Pirates for over thirty years, present on the crew back when Kozuki Oden joined as Second Division Commander.
Arrival at Marineford
Vista surfaced at Marineford with the other commanders to launch the assault on the Navy’s defensive lines.
Vs. Mihawk
On Marco’s orders, Vista intercepted Dracule Mihawk to stop him from killing Luffy. Their duel showcased Vista’s "Flower Sword" style, and when the battle dissolved into chaos, the two swordsmen agreed to a stalemate and postponed the fight.
Protecting Luffy
After Ace’s death, Vista and Marco used Armament Haki to hold off Admiral Akainu, buying Jimbei time to escape with an unconscious Luffy.
Aftermath
Vista survived the war and retreated once the Red-Haired Pirates arrived, later attending Whitebeard and Ace’s funeral on an island in the New World. A year after the war, he and the remaining Whitebeard Pirates fought the Blackbeard Pirates in the Payback War and suffered a crushing defeat, after which the commanders went into hiding.
Master Swordsmanship
Vista is one of the most powerful swordsmen alive, able to fight Dracule Mihawk to a stalemate. His dual-saber style produces a visual effect of falling flower petals with each strike.
Physical Prowess
He has immense strength and reflexes fast enough to intercept an Admiral or the world’s strongest swordsman in a split second.
Armament Haki
Vista is a skilled user of Armament Haki, capable enough to land a physical blow through Admiral Akainu’s Logia defenses.
Observation Haki
Not directly confirmed, though keeping pace with Mihawk implies real skill.
Command
He has the tactical mind needed to run a full division in a global-scale war.
Notes
As a non-Devil Fruit user he has no elemental powers, but he is also unaffected by the sea’s usual curse on fruit users.
Vs. Dracule Mihawk (Chapters 561–562)
Vista intercepted Mihawk’s pursuit of Luffy, and the two clashed with intense sword techniques before agreeing to a mutual stalemate — a fight that marked Vista as one of the few people able to match Mihawk in combat.
Vs. Admiral Akainu (Chapter 574)
Vista and Marco struck Akainu with Haki to stop him chasing Luffy, delaying him successfully even as Akainu called their Haki "annoying" — proof Vista could hurt a Logia user and protect his allies.
The Payback War
The remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates fought the Blackbeard Pirates and were completely defeated, a loss that broke apart the Whitebeard Pirates’ main force.
