Garou is a martial arts prodigy who trained as the top disciple of Bang's dojo until he was expelled for going on a violent rampage against his fellow students, injuring several of them badly enough to end their training for good. Out of that expulsion came his second identity: the self-proclaimed "Hero Hunter," a one-man crusade against the Hero Association built on the belief that the world needs a consistent, unbiased evil rather than heroes who claim the moral high ground while acting hypocritically. His growing fascination with monsters over the course of that crusade eventually earns him the title "Human Monster."
His combat style is built to counter almost any opponent, combining raw hand-to-hand mastery with supernatural senses, afterimage creation, technique mimicry — copying moves he's seen or felt firsthand — and an ability to grow stronger at an accelerated rate the more he fights. At his peak, Garou becomes one of the strongest villains in the series, a Dragon+-level threat comparable to Boros, capable of defeating Golden Sperm and most of the remaining S-Class heroes with his signature technique. Even in his climactic fight with Saitama, he's ultimately beaten back but manages to escape before the heroes can finish him for good.
In human form, Garou is a slender but extremely muscular young man with sharp, avian features and yellow eyes. His long silver hair is styled into two thick points resembling a wolf’s ears. He wears a skintight black long-sleeved shirt, white martial arts trousers secured by a yellow sash, and black tai chi slippers.
Half-Monster
His hair turned red from his own dried blood, and his clothes began fusing with his skin under extreme physical trauma.
Monster / Awakened
His body became encased in a black, spiral-like organic shell with jagged protrusions, his hair sharpened into horn-like structures, and he eventually grew massive, tattered wings.
Cosmic Fear
His body became a silhouette of the cosmos itself, filled with stars and galaxies, his face obscured by a dark void save for glowing eyes.
Post-War
He now wears a dark grey tracksuit with a “GAROU” name tag while performing community service.
Arrogant and Relentless
Observant and driven by a manic joy for combat, with a deep-seated hatred for anyone he deems “popular” or “hypocritical.”
Driven by Childhood Trauma
Aims to abolish “unequal justice” by becoming an “Absolute Evil” that treats everyone with equal terror, believing this is the only path to true world peace.
Genius Tactician
His greatest strength is a genius-level tactical mind and the ability to mimic fighting styles instantly. His fatal flaw is narcissism — it blinded him to the fact that he was being used by “God.”
A Protective Streak He Never Lost
Throughout his hero-hunting campaign, he maintained a protective instinct for the child Tareo, proof his core humanity was never fully extinguished. After his defeat, he shows a begrudging but genuine willingness to atone through hard work.
As a boy, Garou was an outcast who rooted for the villains in television shows and games. Bullied by “popular” kids who forced him to play the role of the monster, he grew to resent the entire hero-villain dynamic.
Seeking the power to change his fate, he joined Bang’s dojo and quickly became its top student, mastering the Fist of Flowing Water, Crushing Rock. Six months before his hero-hunting campaign began, he “went wild” at the dojo, crippling several fellow students; Bang defeated and expelled him as a result.
The Hero Hunt
Garou crashes a Hero Association meeting and declares he will hunt every hero present, defeating multiple Class A and B heroes and hospitalizing the S-Class Tanktop Master and his entire army. He fights Metal Bat to a standstill before the duel is broken up by Metal Bat’s younger sister, Zenko. He also attempts to hunt Watchdog-man in City Q, but is soundly defeated, unable to adapt to Watchdog-man’s animalistic four-limbed fighting style.
Cornered and Rescued
Badly injured and poisoned, Garou is surrounded by eight heroes led by Death Gatling but uses a stolen Hero Guide to tactically dismantle the group one by one. He is then intercepted by Genos, Bang, and Bang’s brother Bomb, who nearly kill him — until he is rescued at the last moment by the Monster Association’s Elder Centipede and Phoenix Man.
Monster Association War
Garou refuses to formally join the Monster Association, viewing them as too small to contain him. He fights the Monster King Orochi in a battle of immense scale and survives, though he is ultimately overwhelmed. He goes on to defeat Puri-Puri Prisoner and Superalloy Darkshine — the Darkshine fight, in which his ribs and organs are shattered yet he keeps growing stronger mid-battle, is the turning point that starts him breaking his own biological “limiter.” He later defeats his own former master, Bang, using his new Monster Calamity God Slayer Fist.
Cosmic Fear and the Battle on Io
An entity calling itself “God” approaches Garou and grants him divine power, transforming him into “Cosmic Fear” Garou. In this state he battles Saitama on Io, a moon of Jupiter, in a clash powerful enough to threaten the solar system itself.
Redemption
Realizing his own power has killed Tareo via lethal radiation, Garou passes his secret time-reversing technique to Saitama to undo the damage. Restored to his human body with no memory of his cosmic crimes, he returns to Bang’s dojo under his former master’s supervision, performing community service and training while working to atone.
Fist of Flowing Water, Crushing Rock
A defensive martial arts style that parries and redirects an opponent’s own force back at them.
Exploding Heart Release Fist
A forbidden, highly destructive style he mastered from a hidden scroll.
Monster Calamity God Slayer Fist
His ultimate technique, synergizing every fighting style he has ever witnessed into a single, overwhelming art.
Reactive Evolution
Grows measurably stronger in direct response to physical trauma and near-death experiences.
Cosmic Fear Powers
Nuclear Fission (generating and controlling nuclear explosions with his strikes), the Fist of Gravity (manipulating gravitational forces), and the All Life Eradication Fist (mimicking any life form or energy signature in the universe, including Saitama’s own strength).
Genius Intelligence
Capable of memorizing complex fighting patterns after seeing them only once.
vs. Tanktop Master — Ch. 46–47
Garou used pure technique to bypass Tanktop Master’s brute strength, hospitalizing him and his entire army in one fight. First real proof he was a legitimate S-Class-level threat.
vs. Orochi — Ch. 92
Fought the Monster King himself in the depths of City Z. Got impaled and lost, but walked away — proof his resilience scaled even against something non-human.
vs. Superalloy Darkshine — Ch. 126–129
Shattered Darkshine’s “shine” and psychological confidence badly enough to trigger a full mental breakdown. The fight that pushed Garou past human limits and into his first true monster transformation.
vs. Saitama — Ch. 160–166
A multi-dimensional clash that tore apart the moon Io. Saitama simply out-evolved him and ended it — the defeat that broke Garou’s “Absolute Evil” ideology and set up his redemption.

Mentioned only: Ch. 38, 95, 122, 191.
Bang (Silverfang)
His former master and most significant parental figure. Bang expelled Garou after his rampage at the dojo, but later took personal responsibility for stopping him before the Hero Association could kill him. Post-war, Bang has dedicated himself to Garou’s rehabilitation.
Bomb
Bang’s older brother, who joined the hunt for Garou. Though willing to use lethal force, he eventually acknowledged Garou’s extraordinary talent.
Parents
Distant and neglectful — when Garou was taken into custody after his defeat, they never came to check on him.
Tareo
A bullied child Garou met in a park and came to call his “unlikely friend.” Despite a harsh, dismissive manner toward him, Garou repeatedly risked his life to protect Tareo from both heroes and monsters. Tareo’s dying words begging for Garou’s life convinced Saitama not to kill him, and it was to save Tareo specifically that Garou passed on his time-reversing technique.
Saitama
The wall Garou could never overcome, and the obsessive focus of his need to prove his “Absolute Evil” philosophy. Saitama never saw Garou as a true monster — just a “kid in a costume” who needed a reality check.
Metal Bat
Initially a hunting target, their duel interrupted by Metal Bat’s sister Zenko. Later, during the war, the two form an unintentional alliance against Sage Centipede, their fighting styles aligning through a phenomenon of “resonance” that amplified both their power.
Genos
Viewed by Garou as a persistent, dangerous opponent who analyzed his movements and repeatedly tried to incinerate him.
Superalloy Darkshine
Darkshine initially tried to “mentor” Garou toward heroism, but Garou’s relentless evolution instead shattered Darkshine’s confidence and left him in a full mental collapse.
"God"
A higher entity that exploited Garou’s desperation for power, granting him divine strength to use him as a vessel. Garou eventually realized he was being manipulated and defied the entity’s plan.
The Monster Association
Garou flatly refused to join them, viewing the organization as too small to contain him, and clashed directly with the Monster King Orochi and the tactician Gyoro-Gyoro.
Kiro (Gau Yellow)
Garou’s celebrity crush — a superhero actress from the Gau Rangers whom he told Bang resembles his mother, “except kinder.”
Suiryu
A fellow martial artist Garou meets after his rehabilitation begins; the two develop a begrudging rapport, with Suiryu offering him a hand during his transition back into society.
“Popular guys winning and unpopular guys losing is a tragedy!” — as a child
“I am the monster Garou... the human monster!”
“The world doesn’t need unequal justice. It needs equal absolute evil.”
“I’ll infinitely copy him... until I overcome him!” — on Saitama
Garou is the only human shown to break his biological “limiter” while simultaneously undergoing monsterization. His Cosmic Fear state emits lethal radiation intense enough to kill ordinary humans and lower-tier heroes simply by proximity. During his hunt, he was known to “dine-and-dash” at high-end restaurants to fuel his metabolism. Post-war, he works as a delivery man and laborer under Bang’s supervision.
