Semiu Grier

セミュ・グライア

Supporting Gachiakuta ★ 98 Favorites

Semiu Grier (セミュ・グライア) is the receptionist of the South Branch Cleaners' headquarters, the leader of Team Front, and the organisation's primary evaluator for new recruits and extermination mission logistics. She holds what she has always wanted: an office job. She also happens to be one of the most capable Givers in the branch, with a Vital Instrument purpose-built for seeing through people.

Her glasses — Jinki named Eyes — grant her kinetic visual acuity and the ability to perceive a person's "true essence," which she uses to determine whether a recruit has the potential and sincerity to function as a Cleaner. She is the filter everyone passes through before Enjin takes them seriously. When Enjin brought Rudo to headquarters and asked her to give him a look over, she examined him, jolted back in shock at what she found, composed herself immediately, and told him his fundamentals were high but his Jinki stability needed work. She also told him he had poo on himself.

She manages job rush after job rush, handles communication channels during active crises, mobilises the entire branch when Corvus says so, and reads adult magazines at her desk as a stress management strategy, which she refers to as taking "supplements." She is perpetually exhausted, extremely competent, and would fight anyone who implied those two things were contradictions.

Semiu is a tall, slim woman in her late twenties with dark skin, yellow eyes, and white hair cut in a sharp tapered style — short, precise, and maintained without visible effort. Her glasses — the Eyes Jinki — are circular-framed and connected by a beaded chain to her collar. Around her neck is the standard Cleaners communication choker.

Her outfit is professionally assembled but designed for someone who may need to stop being a receptionist very quickly. She wears a low-cut zipped tank top with dark edges and a grey middle. Her arms are covered by long black fingerless gloves that leave a gap at the shoulders. She wears baggy white trousers held up by two belts — one of which attaches to her Cleaners bag. The trousers tighten at the bottom and end mid-shin. Her shoes are black open-toe high heels, which add 8 cm to her official height of 175 cm. She lists both measurements in her profile.

The overall impression is someone who decided that "office attire" and "combat ready" were not incompatible, and resolved the tension by wearing both simultaneously. She manages desk work, crisis coordination, and the occasional physical removal of invaders from HQ in the same outfit.

Semiu is confident, professional, and moves through everything quickly — her preferred operating speed is faster than the current pace of whatever she is dealing with. She is also, at any given point during a job rush, somewhere on the continuum between mildly strained and genuinely convinced she is about to die from overwork.

Competence and Exhaustion, Coexisting

She manages dozens of simultaneous requests, assigns appropriate Giver teams to specific threats, coordinates communication channels during active crises, and handles the logistical fallout of whatever Team Akuta has just done. She does all of this without losing her professional composure, while internally reaching a point she describes as "Semiu is dying!!" — which is a volume 8 cover quote. The gap between her internal state and her external presentation is its own running character note.

Low Tolerance for Disrespect

She has a dry sense of humour and a specific disposition toward anyone who underestimates her. The Anibase notes that she enjoys delivering "punishments" to anyone who disrespects her. She does not broadcast this. She also does not give a second warning. Enjin notes that getting past her without a "stellar strategy" is almost impossible — a statement that functions as a professional endorsement and a quiet warning.

The "Supplements"

Semiu's coping mechanism for extreme work stress is reading adult magazines at her desk. She refers to this as taking "supplements" to maintain her cool — a habit the series introduces with the same deadpan delivery she applies to everything else. It is presented as an established eccentricity rather than a punchline, which gives it a different quality than standard comic relief. She is not embarrassed about it. She is too tired to be embarrassed about anything.

The Dream She Actually Achieved

Semiu always wanted to be an "office girl." This is stated as a genuine childhood aspiration rather than a consolation positioning. She is a high-tier Giver who could operate on the frontline, chose not to, and built her career around the version of the Cleaners that involves a desk. That is not a compromise. That is a person who knew what they wanted and arranged their considerable abilities around getting it.

Introduction — Evaluating Rudo

Semiu Grier evaluating Rudo with her Eyes Vital Instrument at Cleaners HQ in Gachiakuta
Chapters 6–7

Semiu was finishing her lunch when Enjin arrived with Rudo. She activated Eyes and examined Rudo — performing two quick manoeuvres in the air with a fork before focusing on the evaluation. The examination caused her to jolt back in shock, which she immediately composed away. Her assessment: everything about his Vital Instrument stability was high, but he needed training to manage it properly. She also informed him he had poo on himself. He was from the Sphere. She was not going to pretend she had not noticed.

When Enjin and Rudo left to meet Corvus, she called back to tell Enjin she had forgotten to mention the boss was away on a trip — a detail delivered with the energy of someone who was already processing the next three problems.

Field Operations Management — The Job Rush

Chapters 58–60, ongoing

While Team Akuta operates in the field, Semiu manages the logistical infrastructure behind every mission. During periods of high Trash Beast activity — which the Cleaners call "job rushes" — she coordinates simultaneously across multiple outbreaks, assigning teams, managing communication, and handling the administrative consequence of every field decision. The series depicts this with her surrounded by escalating stacks of paperwork while her physical state degrades visibly. She takes supplements. She keeps working.

Post-Penta — Monitoring Amo Empool

Following Penta arc

After the Penta mission brought Amo Empool into Cleaner custody, Semiu used Eyes to monitor Amo's recovery and evaluate her soul's potential. Her assessment was significant: she identified that Amo's true power type is a Healer — currently suppressed and imperfect because of her history, but present and accessible in principle. This evaluation informed Corvus's decision to place Amo in Team Front rather than a general combat unit. Semiu's insight was the diagnostic that opened that possibility.

Doll Festival Arc — Coordination Under Crisis

Chapters 157–159

During Mymo's takeover of the South Ward, Semiu remained at headquarters managing communication channels and monitoring the escalating situation. Chapter 157, titled "The Reason for Reliance," focuses on her perspective as she tracks the battle and manages the branch's response — expressing concern for the team while keeping every operational channel functional. When Gris sent a distress call regarding the Raiders, Corvus ordered her to mobilise every available Cleaner for a search party. She did.

Vital Instrument — Eyes (The Glasses)

Semiu Grier activating Eyes to perceive a recruit's true essence in Gachiakuta

Semiu's Jinki is a pair of glasses named Eyes — circular-framed, connected by a beaded chain to her collar, and worn constantly as part of her standard office appearance. When activated, Eyes vastly amplifies her kinetic visual acuity to superhuman levels, allowing her to perceive things at speeds and depths that normal sight cannot access.

Soul Perception — "True Essence"

The primary application of Eyes is its ability to allow Semiu to see through physical surfaces and perceive a person's "true essence" — the quality and character of their soul, their Anima potential, and their sincerity. This makes her the Cleaners' most effective evaluator of new recruits: she can determine whether someone has the genuine capacity to become a capable Giver, or whether they are presenting a performance that their actual foundation cannot support.

When she evaluated Rudo, the examination was strong enough to cause her to physically jolt back in shock before she recovered. Whatever she perceived in him was outside the normal range of what her instrument had encountered. Her composed follow-up — assessing his instrument stability as high while noting his lack of control — was the professional synthesis of a genuinely extraordinary reading.

Amo Empool's Healer Classification

Semiu's evaluation of Amo Empool's soul identified that her true power type is a Healer — currently suppressed and operating imperfectly due to trauma. This was a diagnostic finding rather than a combat application, but it was one of the series' most consequential evaluations: Corvus's decision to place Amo in Team Front was built on Semiu's assessment. The power to identify what someone could become rather than just what they currently are is what makes Eyes uniquely valuable to the organisation.

Follo Tunito's Awakening Analysis

Semiu also analysed the circumstances of Follo Tunito's Giver awakening in Tori — identifying that traces of Rudo's Anima flow were present at the source of Follo's power, which led to the conclusion that Rudo had catalysed the awakening. This kind of post-hoc analysis is another application of Eyes at its highest level: not just seeing what a soul is, but reading what happened to it and tracing the cause.

Combat Capability

Despite her desk role, Semiu is a high-tier combatant. She has chased off invaders from HQ single-handedly using a combination of high-level martial techniques and the superhuman visual acuity Eyes provides in active combat. Enjin's note that getting past her without a stellar strategy is "almost impossible" is an assessment he delivers with genuine respect rather than affection. She fights when she has to, and she is very good at it. She just prefers not to.

Arkha Corvus — Her Boss, Whom She Scolds

Semiu works directly under Corvus and is one of the few people in the organisation who openly scolds him — specifically for his habit of not wearing his communication choker. The relationship is one of genuine professional respect with a clearly established power dynamic that Semiu does not always observe in the direction the hierarchy would suggest. She mobilises the entire branch when he orders it and tells him off when he does something inconvenient. Both appear to be standard operating procedure.

Enjin — Deep Professional Trust

Enjin relies on Semiu's evaluation to determine whether a recruit is worth training — she is the step that precedes his investment in someone. They share the specific kind of trust that develops between two capable people who have worked together long enough to operate without explaining themselves. His endorsement of her combat reputation — noting that getting past her without a stellar strategy is "almost impossible" — is the kind of professional acknowledgment that says more than a formal recommendation would.

Rudo Surebrec — Watchful Distance

After evaluating Rudo's soul and receiving a result that physically startled her, Semiu has maintained a watchful interest in him. She has not made this personal or expressive — she remains professionally distant — but she noted something in his essence that was outside the normal range, and she keeps an eye on what he becomes. Her evaluation was the first professional assessment that Rudo was genuinely exceptional rather than simply unusually powered.

Amo Empool — The Evaluation That Mattered

Semiu's identification of Amo as a suppressed Healer was the diagnostic that shaped how the Cleaners integrated her. It was not a relationship in the social sense — Semiu assessed Amo's soul during recovery monitoring and reported what she found. But the consequence of that assessment was Amo being placed in Team Front, which Semiu leads. They are now in the same unit, which means whatever Amo becomes, Semiu is positioned to see it happening.

Team Akuta (Zanka, Riyo) — Coordination

Semiu manages Team Akuta's mission assignments, coordinates their deployment, and handles their administrative recovery periods. The relationship is professional and well-established — they know how she operates, and she knows their capabilities well enough to assign them appropriately. She is the infrastructure that makes their field work possible.

"Semiu is dying!!" — Semiu Grier, during a job rush — Volume 8 cover / Chapter 90
"Give me a minute to take some supplements." — Semiu Grier, reaching for her adult magazine mid-shift, Chapter 58
  • In the anime adaptation (Studio Bones, 2025), Semiu is voiced by Mie Sonozaki (Japanese) and Kenneisha Thompson (English). The casting was announced after Episode 3 aired. Sonozaki is known for voicing Cynthia in Great Pretender, among other notable roles.
  • Her official height is 175 cm, but she explicitly adds her 8 cm heels to her profile stats, bringing her listed height to 183 cm. This is not a mistake. She is making a point.
  • She is the only character in the series shown to have a Vital Instrument specifically designed for perceiving and evaluating other people's souls. Every other Jinki in the series is combat-oriented, utility-oriented, or both. Eyes is, at its core, a diagnostic instrument.
  • Her Vital Instrument is formally named Eyes — confirmed by the Anibase character profile. The document that circulated with her profile referred to them as "a pair of glasses" without the name; the Fandom wiki confirms the title.
  • She is also listed as the leader of Team Front — not just HQ receptionist. Amo Empool and Semiu Graea are both members of Team Front under Corvus's direct command. Semiu leads the unit.
  • Her childhood dream was to be an "office girl." She is one. She is also a high-tier Giver who defeated unnamed invaders who attacked HQ single-handedly. These two facts coexist without either diminishing the other.
  • The "supplements" habit — reading adult magazines as stress relief — is introduced and treated with the same deadpan tone as everything else about her. The series does not make it a joke at her expense. It is a character trait with the same weight as Rudo's love of sweets or Enjin's loud car music.
  • Her evaluation of Rudo caused a physical jolt of shock that she had to consciously suppress. In a character whose default mode is professional composure, that response is the clearest signal the series provides that what she perceived in Rudo's soul was genuinely unprecedented in her experience.
  • Semiu also performed the post-awakening analysis of Follo Tunito — identifying that Rudo's Anima flow had catalysed the awakening, which established one of the series' most significant unresolved questions about Rudo's full capabilities.
