Shimura, Suguru

A tall, athletic 36-year-old with short, neatly swept-back dark hair, built like the former national-level athlete he is. Dresses in standard high-end dark suits; by the later Yotsuba meetings, he’s frequently shown visibly worried and sweating.

Pessimistic, cautious, and motivated more by self-preservation than the greed or logic driving his colleagues. Namikawa describes him as always “thinking negatively,” obsessing over whether the detective Eraldo Coil (secretly L) might betray them. As the pressure mounts, Shimura goes from calculating executive to a genuinely terrified man, eventually breaking down and begging to leave the group entirely.

Raised by a single mother, Shimura was a national-team-level rugby star in high school before graduating from Kyodo University’s law department — a combination of athletic discipline and legal knowledge that fast-tracked him to Head of Personnel at one of Japan’s largest conglomerates.

Shimura joins the Yotsuba Eight’s secret weekly meetings in 2004, and is the most openly anxious about what discovery would mean for all of them once L begins investigating the group as “Coil.” By the time the investigation peaks, he has a full breakdown, going to Reiji Namikawa in tears and saying he wants out of Kira’s “evil plans” — Namikawa and Shingo Midou have to talk him down to stop him from panicking into exposing the group. He’s present at Yotsuba headquarters when Higuchi is finally captured, witnessing the collapse of the Eight firsthand. Once Light regains his memories and the notebook, he eliminates every remaining witness; Shimura dies of a heart attack on April 10, 2005.

Shimura breaks down crying to Namikawa about his fear of Kira’s plans and his wish to quit. He’s talked out of it — effectively trapped in the group until his death, and a clear demonstration of the psychological toll the notebook takes on ordinary people who try to use it for mundane gain.

The Yotsuba Eight vs. L (Ch. 37–53)

Shimura joins the group’s effort to hide from L while riding Kira’s power for profit. L identifies the group anyway, leading to Higuchi’s capture and the eventual death of every remaining executive.
