Light Yagami is a genius high school student who finds a Death Note and decides to use it to purge the world of criminals under the name Kira, aiming to become the god of a “New World” built on his own idea of justice. His killings drive a real drop in global crime and eventually force major governments to acknowledge Kira as a genuine force, all while Light maintains a double life — leading the very Task Force hunting him after the original L’s death, while secretly still directing every execution.
His six-year reign runs through duels with three generations of detectives — L, then Near and Mello — and survives entirely on Light’s ability to stay several moves ahead of everyone chasing him. It ends at the Yellowbox Warehouse, where Near finally proves his guilt in front of everyone, and where Ryuk, exactly as promised the day they met, writes Light’s name in his own Death Note.
Light is a young man of average height with a lean, athletic build, short straight light-brown hair, and brown eyes. As a student he’s almost always in a school uniform or neat casual clothes; after joining the National Police Agency, he shifts to dark business suits and ties.
His expression is usually calm and composed — the “model student” look he cultivates deliberately — but it breaks into a predatory, manic grin in private moments of triumph or when his identity is under threat. He’s consistently described as attractive, and he uses that fact as a manipulation tool as readily as his intelligence.
Rigid, Self-Appointed Morality
Light believes, without doubt, that he’s the only person capable of “cleaning” the world, and treats that belief as justification for everything that follows.
Narcissistic and Manipulative
Once purely a bored model student, the notebook turns him into someone who views other people almost entirely as tools, while still perfectly performing empathy and affection to protect his public image.

Light is the son of Soichiro Yagami, Deputy Director of the NPA, and Sachiko Yagami, and has a younger sister, Sayu. Born February 28, 1986, he grew up in a stable household and was consistently ranked the top student in Japan — a Junior High National Tennis Champion who entered To-Oh University with a perfect entrance exam score and served as freshman representative. Before finding the notebook, he was already deeply dissatisfied with what he saw as a “rotten” world, but had no real way to act on it.
Discovery
In 2003, Light finds the Death Note Ryuk dropped into the human world and confirms its power by killing a hostage-taker and a harasser, setting his plan as Kira in motion.
The Duel with L
After L baits him with the Lind L. Tailor broadcast, Light goes on the offensive — eliminating the FBI agents sent to investigate him and killing Naomi Misora to protect his identity — before L reveals himself directly at To-Oh University and pulls Light into a face-to-face psychological war.
Confinement and the Yotsuba Arc
To clear suspicion, Light forfeits ownership of the notebook, erasing his own memories of being Kira, then works alongside L as a genuinely memory-wiped ally to help capture the Yotsuba Kira, Kyosuke Higuchi.
Victory Over L
Regaining his memories the moment he touches the recovered notebook, Light manipulates the Shinigami Rem into killing Watari and L to protect Misa — removing his greatest obstacle for good.
Reign as the New L
For five years, Light operates as both Kira and the “Second L,” expanding his influence globally while facing down L’s successors, Near and Mello — a conflict that escalates when Mello kidnaps Light’s sister, Sayu.
Exposure and Death
In 2010 at the Yellowbox Warehouse, Near proves Light is Kira by exposing a notebook swap carried out by his agent, Stephen Gevanni. After a failed attempt to kill the investigators and a full breakdown, Ryuk writes Light Yagami’s name in his own notebook, ending his life.

A years-long intellectual war: L suspects Light, and Light works to kill L without ever being caught. Light wins by manipulating Rem into executing both L and Watari, cementing himself as the dominant power in the human world for the next five years.
vs. Naomi Misora — The Identification Chase (Ch. 13–15)
After Naomi deduces Kira can kill by means other than heart attacks and tries to reach the Task Force, Light tricks her into revealing her real name and forces her to take her own life — cutting off information that could have exposed him early.
vs. Near and Mello — The Successor War (Ch. 60–108)
Near and Mello close in on Light through separate, conflicting methods. Mello’s actions ultimately lead Near to the real notebook, exposing Light at the warehouse and permanently ending the Kira era.

Ryuk

His greatest rival. L calls Light his “first-ever friend,” a line Light assumes is tactical rather than genuine. Light respects L’s mind, even calling him the best detective in the world, but never wavers from treating him as an obstacle that has to be removed.
Near and Mello
L’s successors, whom Light views with open disdain — Near as a persistent nuisance, Mello as a dangerous loose cannon who eventually forces his hand by kidnapping his sister.
Soichiro Yagami
His father. Light keeps up the act of a dutiful son while ruthlessly using Soichiro’s trust and NPA position to stay ahead of the investigation, all the while relying on his father’s unwavering belief in his innocence as cover.
Misa Amane
A tool, in Light’s own words — he uses her Shinigami Eyes and devotion for as long as they’re useful, and has explicitly said he’ll kill her once she isn’t. He plays the doting boyfriend just well enough to keep her loyal.
Kiyomi Takada
His spokesperson and self-declared “Goddess” of the New World. Light rekindles their old college relationship purely to use her feelings for him as leverage.
