Near, real name Nate River, is the youngest of L’s Wammy’s House successors. After L dies in 2004, he spends the next several years quietly building his own case, and in 2009 convinces the U.S. President that the current “L” is a fraud — forming the SPK to hunt Kira independently of Light’s compromised investigation. His analytical, emotionally detached approach makes him Light’s primary opponent for the entire second half of the series.
Working alongside, and often against, his rival Mello, Near eventually exposes Light Yagami as Kira at the Yellowbox Warehouse in 2010 — and takes on the title of L himself afterward, continuing the work of the detective he spent his whole life trying to live up to.
A pale, slender young man with short, messy platinum-blonde hair and large grey eyes shadowed by dark circles, often giving him a wide-eyed, unreadable expression. Almost always crouched or huddled — frequently sitting on the floor with his knees pulled to his chest — and dressed in simple, loose white pajamas or a plain white shirt and trousers. By the time of the later “a-Kira” incident, his hair has grown out past his shoulders, though the white clothing and huddled posture stay the same.

Where Mello runs on emotion, Near solves problems calmly and without any real feeling attached — treating the entire Kira case as a puzzle to be completed, not a personal mission.

Raised at Wammy’s House in Winchester, England, Near consistently ranks as the orphanage’s top student — ahead of Mello, a fact that defines their entire rivalry. When L dies in 2004, director Roger asks Near and Mello to work together on the case; Near agrees, but Mello refuses and leaves the orphanage entirely. Near then departs for the United States and spends three years building his own independent investigation from scratch.
Founding the SPK
In 2009, Near presents evidence to the U.S. President that the current “L” is a fraud and Kira is still active, leading directly to the formation of the SPK under his leadership.
The Mafia Arc
When Mello’s mafia kidnaps Sayu Yagami, Near makes contact with the “New L” (Light) and quickly deduces both that Kira is operating from inside the Japanese police and that the mafia now has a Death Note of its own.
Identifying Kira
Piecing together the fabricated “13-day rule” and Light’s connection to Misa Amane, Near concludes Light is Kira and Misa the Second Kira — then identifies Teru Mikami as Light’s proxy by tracking his TV appearances and movements.
The Yellowbox Warehouse
On January 28, 2010, Near sets up a final confrontation with Light and the Task Force, having his agent Stephen Gevanni forge a perfect duplicate of Mikami’s notebook beforehand. When Mikami writes every name in the room except Light’s into the fake notebook, nobody dies — and Near reveals the real one, exposing Light as Kira in front of everyone.
Becoming L
After Light’s death, Near formally takes the name L, running the SPK from a high-tech American facility. He looks into the later “C-Kira” and “a-Kira” incidents, but dismisses both as either too small or too well-executed to bother pursuing personally.

Both Near and Mello try to recover the Death Note from the mafia and expose Kira through different means. Mello’s information ends up handing Near proof the notebook’s rules were faked — a messy, uncoordinated win that gives Near what he needs to seriously suspect Light.
vs. Light Yagami — The Final Conflict (Ch. 78–103)
Near baits Light into a face-to-face meeting while Gevanni secretly swaps the real notebook for a forgery. Light’s name being the only one missing from Mikami’s list proves his identity beyond doubt — ending the six-year Kira reign and cementing Near as L’s true successor.

His idol and the standard he measures himself against. Near refuses to solve the Kira case in any way that would “insult” L’s memory — no killing suspects without absolute proof — and admits he liked L even more on learning L had considered both him and Mello as potential successors.

His lifelong rival at Wammy’s House, where Near always held the top rank. Near treats their dynamic as a game to see who reaches Kira first, and openly credits Mello’s unpredictable, emotional moves — specifically uncovering the fake rules — as the missing piece that let him finally corner Light.
Light Yagami (Kira)
His primary adversary, whom he views with total intellectual contempt — calling him a “mass-murdering terrorist,” not a god. Their conflict is, in Near’s own framing, a battle for pride that ends with him proving Light’s guilt beyond any argument.
