Shuichi Aizawa is a senior detective on the Japanese Task Force whose grounded, principled sense of justice frequently puts him at odds with L’s cold, utilitarian methods. He becomes the team’s leader after Soichiro’s death, and it’s his own quiet, patient investigative work — not any genius-level deduction — that finally provides the concrete evidence needed to expose Light Yagami as Kira.
Unlike most of the cast, Aizawa is defined as much by what he refuses to sacrifice as by what he does: family always factors into his decisions, even when it means stepping back from the case entirely for a while.
A middle-aged man with a strong, athletic build, a sharp jawline, and intense eyes. In the series’ first half he’s instantly recognizable by his large black afro; after the four-year time skip, he switches to short, professional hair and a thick mustache, a visual signal of both his seniority and the years of accumulated stress. Almost always in a dark formal suit.
Stubborn and Hot-Headed
Approaches the investigation as a career police officer and father, not an intellectual game — and is often the loudest critic of L’s ethically questionable tactics, like secretly surveilling his own team’s families.

One of the few officers who stays on the case after Kira starts killing police, Aizawa is deeply shaken by colleague Hirokazu Ukita’s death during the Sakura TV incident — and resents L for physically restraining him from trying to intervene.
The Resignation Crisis
When the government pulls support and L tests the team’s loyalty by suggesting they quit the police entirely, Aizawa is the only one who chooses to return to the NPA to support his family — though he keeps helping from outside the official investigation.
Leading the Task Force
After L’s death and Soichiro’s, Aizawa steps into the leadership role. When Near reaches out with suspicions about Light, Aizawa starts his own quiet investigation and discovers Light and Kiyomi Takada are secretly communicating through marks on a hotel notepad — confirming it by leaving his own secret mark and watching pages disappear.
The Yellowbox Warehouse
Aizawa arranges the Task Force’s attendance at the final confrontation, brings the notebook Near uses to prove Mikami’s is a forgery, and personally helps restrain Light once he’s exposed and breaks down.
After the Case
Aizawa becomes head of the NPA’s investigative unit, working alongside Near (now L) on later incidents like the 2013 “a-Kira” auction, and keeps a watchful eye on an increasingly impulsive Matsuda.
