Mikami, Teru

A tall man in his late twenties with a lean, athletic build kept up through years of disciplined training. Long, straight dark hair often falls across his face, framing sharp, intense eyes behind rectangular glasses. Always in high-end professional attire — dark tailored suits and ties — or a neat dark trench coat while out on his own business. At the Yellowbox Warehouse, his usual composure gives way entirely: dishevelled, wide-eyed, and bloodshot with panic.

A Pathological Sense of Justice

Sees the world in strict binary — people are either “good” or “evil,” with nothing in between, and evil exists only to be erased.

Extraordinarily Methodical

Every part of his life is scheduled down to the day — work, meals, gym visits — and he holds himself to the same discipline as X-Kira, filling exactly one page of the Death Note per day and never more.

Genuinely Selfless, in His Own Mind

Writes names while mentally repeating “Delete” — to him, criminals aren’t people being killed, they’re errors being corrected. He’s a capable, intelligent lawyer, but his total devotion to Light blinds him to Light’s human flaws and leaves him with no flexibility when something unpredictable happens.

Raised in Kyoto as an only child by a single mother, Mikami was an exceptionally bright kid who was bullied often, and took it on himself to protect other students — eventually becoming class president through elementary and middle school just to enforce order. His mother eventually told him to stop getting involved in other people’s problems, and he began resenting her for it, deciding she wasn’t “righteous.” When she died in a traffic accident that also killed the students who’d bullied him, Mikami concluded it was divine judgment, and that he was meant to be its instrument. He went on to graduate from Kyodo University’s law department and became a prosecutor — a career he considered his ideal way to bring justice to evil.

Selection

Under heavy surveillance in late 2009, Light searches Kira’s supporter questionnaires for a proxy and picks Mikami based on his profession and his one-word answer that Kira is “God.”

Taking Up the Role

Light sends him a Death Note through spokesperson Hitoshi Demegawa. Mikami immediately performs the eye trade with Ryuk, then executes Demegawa himself on live television for using Kira’s name for personal profit, replacing him with Kiyomi Takada as the new spokesperson.

Discovered

Near identifies Mikami as X-Kira by watching how he reacts to Takada’s appointment on TV, then has agent Stephen Gevanni tail him — a task made easy by how perfectly scheduled Mikami’s life is — eventually letting Gevanni touch and study his notebook.

The Fatal Deviation

When Mello kidnaps Takada in January 2010, a panicked Mikami breaks his unbreakable routine to retrieve the real Death Note from a bank vault and kill her himself — not realizing Light had already handled it with a hidden scrap of paper. That break in routine is exactly what lets Gevanni locate and forge his notebook overnight.

Defeat

At the Yellowbox Warehouse on January 28, 2010, Mikami writes every name in the room except Light’s into what he believes is the real notebook. Nobody dies. Near reveals the forgery, and Mikami’s own public declaration that Light is his God becomes the final proof of Light’s identity. He’s arrested on the spot, and reportedly dies in prison ten days later, having lost his mind entirely.

Disgusted by Demegawa using Kira’s name for personal gain, Mikami judges and executes him live on air — establishing his own independent judgment and clearing the way to install Takada as spokesperson instead.

vs. Stephen Gevanni — The Surveillance War (Ch. 91–102)

Gevanni tails Mikami’s rigid daily schedule closely enough to touch his notebook and eventually forge a perfect replica — the single tactical move that decides the entire final arc.

vs. Near and the Task Force — The Final Judgment (Ch. 102–103)

Mikami writes the names of every investigator present into the forged notebook. Nobody dies; he’s captured on the spot, and his own devotion to Light becomes the proof that ends Kira for good.

Light Yagami (Kira)

His God, in the most literal sense he can mean it. Mikami lives entirely to serve him, executing criminals with total precision and never once questioning an order. Light privately finds him “very useful” for his ability to act independently, but sees him as a tool all the same — a loyalty so absolute it ends up dooming them both.

Kiyomi Takada

His sole link to Light, chosen as spokesperson for her intelligence. Their relationship stays strictly professional despite the trust between them — and it’s Mikami who personally executes her once Mello kidnaps her, believing it’s his duty to handle the crisis himself.

Near

His primary adversary, whom he genuinely regards as “evil” incarnate — something that needs deleting to protect his God. Near, for his part, calls Mikami a “man of low calibre” for never once considering his perfect routine could be turned into a weapon against him.

Ryuk

The Shinigami who performs his eye trade. Mikami treats him with professional respect but never bothers forming any real bond — his focus never leaves Kira.

His Mother

A strained, resentful relationship. After she told him to stop involving himself in other people’s problems, Mikami decided she wasn’t “righteous” — and felt nothing when she died, reading it instead as divine judgment.
