Ryuk

Ryuk is a towering, humanoid entity with a grotesque, otherworldly physiology — greyish-blue skin and extremely long, spindly limbs ending in sharp, taloned fingers. His face features large, bulging yellow eyes with red irises, a wide mouth filled with needle-like teeth, and a nose that is little more than a pair of slits. He has tufts of spiky blue-black hair and small, heart-shaped earrings.

His attire consists of black, form-fitting, leather-like garments reinforced with metal studs, rings, and chains. A heavy belt with a large skull buckle holds his own Death Note in a specialized pouch. He also possesses a pair of retractable, feathery black wings that let him fly and hover effortlessly.

Nihilistic and Amusement-Driven

Ryuk views the human world as a novelty compared to the “rotten mess” of the Shinigami Realm, and treats the entire Kira conflict as entertainment rather than something to intervene in.

Observant but Detached

Highly inquisitive and often genuinely delighted by Light’s intricate plans, yet he lacks human empathy and remains emotionally detached even from those he spends years alongside.

Honest, but Only When Asked

Remarkably honest for a supernatural entity, though he frequently withholds key information about the Death Note’s rules until Light specifically asks — just to see how events unfold.

Apple Addiction

Intensely addicted to human-world apples, which he finds “juicy” compared to the sandy, dry apples of his own realm. Deprived of them for too long, he suffers withdrawal symptoms — twisting his body into unnatural positions and performing handstands.

Ryuk originated in the Realm of the Shinigami, where he spent centuries in a state of stagnant boredom, gambling with other Shinigami and watching the human world. Seeking to escape the monotony, he tricked the Shinigami King into letting him obtain a second Death Note — one that actually belonged to a Shinigami named Sidoh, whom Ryuk deceived to acquire it — and intentionally dropped it into the human world.

The Initiation of the Game

In 2003, Ryuk drops his stolen Death Note into the human world and, five days later, travels to Earth to meet its new owner, Light Yagami. He is immediately delighted to find Light has already filled pages with the names of criminals.

The Neutral Observer

Ryuk explains the notebook’s rules and the “terror and torment” awaiting its users, but establishes early on that he is neither Light’s ally nor L’s. He stays close to Light through the first half of the series, offering the Shinigami Eye deal on multiple occasions and providing critical information only when it suits him.

Confinement and the Second Battle

During the Yotsuba Arc, Light temporarily forfeits ownership of Ryuk’s notebook, sending Ryuk back to the Shinigami Realm, where other Shinigami mock him for losing his tool again. After L’s death, Ryuk returns to Earth, first attaching himself to Misa Amane before rejoining Light as he takes on the mantle of the “New L” to battle Near and Mello.

Fulfilling the Pact

At the Yellowbox Warehouse, a wounded and exposed Light begs Ryuk to kill the SPK investigators. Realizing the game is over and that Light’s life in prison would no longer be entertaining to watch, Ryuk instead writes Light Yagami’s own name in his Death Note, fulfilling the promise he made when they first met.

Supplemental Stories

Outside the main narrative, Ryuk observes a boy named Taro Kagami and the alternate “Death Eraser” concept in the original pilot, later returns to Earth in 2019 to meet Minoru Tanaka during the “a-Kira” auction story, and watches a new, “cheap” Kira in the “C-Kira” story who commits suicide after being dismissed by Near.

Death Note Mastery

Can kill any human by writing their name while picturing their face, and can manipulate the specific details of a death for up to 23 days in advance.

Shinigami Eyes

Sees the true name and remaining lifespan of any human just by looking at their face.

Invisibility and Intangibility

Invisible and inaudible to anyone who has not touched his Death Note, and can phase through solid objects like walls and ceilings.

Immortality

Human weapons have no physical effect on him. The only way he can die is by intentionally extending a human’s life out of love.

Flight

Powerful wings capable of high-speed travel and effortless hovering.

Enhanced Senses

Exceptional hearing, allowing him to listen in on conversations from long distances.

vs. Boredom — Ch. 1–108

Ryuk’s primary conflict is internal: escaping the stagnation of the Shinigami Realm through human chaos. Light’s six-year reign provides him with significant entertainment, driving every action he takes from dropping the notebook to killing Light when the fun ends.

vs. Light Yagami (Final Pact) — Ch. 107–108

Wounded and cornered, Light begs Ryuk to kill the SPK investigators. Ryuk refuses and instead writes Light’s name in his Death Note, concluding their contract and confirming Ryuk was never Light’s ally — only his inevitable executioner.

vs. The Shinigami King (The Auction Rule) — Ch. 108.2

After Ryuk assists Minoru Tanaka’s Death Note auction, the Shinigami King creates a new rule to stop the sale. Ryuk is forced to kill Minoru despite acknowledging the boy’s “perfect plan,” demonstrating his subservience to his realm’s higher laws.

Light Yagami (Kira)

Ryuk is the “bond” between Light and the Death Note. While he stays by Light’s side for years and finds his dedication and intelligence “fun,” Ryuk maintains he is on neither Light’s side nor L’s. He remains emotionally detached throughout and ultimately fulfills his promise to write Light’s name in his notebook once Light is defeated.

Misa Amane

Ryuk finds Misa’s fanatical devotion to Light interesting and performs the Shinigami Eye trade with her twice. Misa treats him with surprising familiarity, even offering to call him her “knight in shining armor” — which Ryuk jokingly deflects by claiming to be “shy” around girls.

Rem

A fellow Shinigami and peer. Ryuk finds Rem’s willingness to die for Misa “un-Shinigami-like” and is genuinely surprised when she eventually sacrifices herself.

Sidoh

The Shinigami Ryuk stole the second Death Note from. When Sidoh comes to Earth to reclaim it, Ryuk is somewhat dismissive but eventually helps facilitate the notebook’s return once Light is finished with it.

L (Ryuzaki)

For most of the first arc, L cannot see or perceive Ryuk at all. Once L touches the notebook during the Yotsuba investigation, he finally sees the Shinigami. Ryuk finds the battle between L and Light “hilarious” and “entertaining.”

Minoru Tanaka (a-Kira)

Years after Light’s death, Ryuk finds Minoru’s non-violent plan to auction the Death Note highly innovative and calls their time together “fun” — before being forced to kill him once a new Shinigami King rule takes effect.

The Shinigami King

Ryuk successfully tricked the King to obtain Sidoh’s notebook, but remains bound to follow the King’s new rules, such as the prohibition against selling a Death Note.

• His internal organs have evolved to no longer require food for sustenance, since there is almost no food in the Shinigami Realm — he eats purely for the pleasure of the taste.
• Has an interest in human video games, having asked Light to play Mario Golf and requested a silver Game Boy Advance SP.
• Often acts simple-minded to avoid extra work, but is genuinely highly intelligent and capable of navigating both human and Shinigami law.
• Classified as a C-rank Shinigami within his realm.
