Amane, Misa

A slender young woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, usually styled in pigtails or twin-tails. Her look is primarily Gothic Lolita — dark lace, leather, crosses, elaborate accessories — alongside high-fashion modeling outfits ranging from casual streetwear to elegant dresses. Her Shinigami Eyes let her see floating names and lifespans above anyone she looks at, though they appear entirely normal to everyone else. Her style matures slightly after the series’ time skip, but she keeps her signature dark aesthetic and hairstyle.

Cheerful Exterior, Ruthless Core

Outwardly hyperactive and bubbly, but capable of real coldness and violence whenever it serves Kira’s cause.

Obsessive Devotion

Views Light as her savior and her god for avenging her parents, with essentially no self-preservation instinct where he’s concerned — she halves her own lifespan twice for his benefit and says repeatedly she’d rather die than live without him.

Underestimated, but a Skilled Actress

L and the Task Force consistently write her off as impulsive and shallow, but she’s genuinely capable of holding complex undercover covers together under pressure — even though she struggles with strategy and leans on Light or Rem for direction.

Originally from the Kansai region, Misa moved to Tokyo to build her modeling career and, later, to find Kira. A year before the main story, she watched a burglar murder her parents in front of her; when the original Kira later executed that same burglar, her gratitude toward him became the seed of everything that follows. Around the same time, she was stalked by another man — the Shinigami Gelus, watching her from the Shinigami Realm, fell in love with her and killed the stalker to protect her. Because Shinigami die if they intentionally extend a human’s life, Gelus dissolved into sand, and Rem carried his notebook to Misa afterward.

Becoming the Second Kira

Misa starts sending tapes to Sakura TV claiming to be Kira, hoping to draw the original Kira’s attention. Using her Shinigami Eyes, she identifies Light at a meeting in Aoyama — he’s the only person whose lifespan she can’t see — and tracks him down to pledge her total loyalty.

Confinement and Memory Loss

Once L narrows his suspicion onto Misa, she’s blindfolded and restrained for weeks of interrogation. To protect Light without breaking, she gives up ownership of her notebook, erasing her memories of being Kira — though her feelings for Light survive intact.

The Yotsuba Infiltration

Working as a civilian under Task Force watch, Misa poses as a model for the Yotsuba Group’s commercials and, with Rem’s secret help, manipulates executive Kyosuke Higuchi into confessing he’s the current Kira — recording the proof the Task Force needs to capture him.

Regaining Her Memories

After Higuchi’s death, Light leads her to a notebook he’d hidden; touching it restores her memories. Since she no longer has the Shinigami Eyes, she performs a second eye trade — this time with Ryuk — halving her lifespan again to help Light identify L.

The Final Years

After L’s death, Misa lives with Light and keeps killing on his orders. As Near’s investigation intensifies, Light has her give up the notebook again for her own safety, wiping her memories a second time. In the final stretch of the story, Aizawa and Mogi take her into protective custody, and she’s kept at a hotel during the climax at the Yellowbox Warehouse.

Shinigami Eyes

Gained twice, first from Rem and later from Ryuk, letting her see anyone’s name and remaining lifespan on sight.

L detains Misa on suspicion of being the Second Kira and interrogates her under extreme restraint. She never talks, but gives up her notebook to avoid betraying Light — forcing Light into his memory-loss plan to clear them both.

vs. Kyosuke Higuchi — The Yotsuba Infiltration (Ch. 45–50)

Misa poses as the Second Kira to Higuchi and manipulates him into confessing his identity as Kira, securing the proof that lets the Task Force finally capture him.

vs. Kiyomi Takada — Social Rivalry (Ch. 92)

Misa confronts Light’s new spokesperson and “girlfriend” during a tense dinner, ending up drunk and openly jealous while Takada looks on with cool disdain — exposing the friction between Light’s various pawns in the final arc.

Light Yagami

The object of her obsession — her boyfriend, her savior, her god. She tells him outright she’d gladly die for him or be used as his weapon. Light, in return, treats her as a useful asset and an occasional liability, keeping up the boyfriend act (even proposing marriage at one point) purely to keep her loyal, while privately viewing her as not smart enough to be a real partner.

Rem

Her devoted protector. Unlike the detached Ryuk, Rem falls genuinely in love with the idea of Misa’s happiness, threatens repeatedly to kill Light if Misa dies before her time, and ultimately gives her own life killing L and Watari to save her.

L (Ryuzaki)

Mutual antagonism laced with manipulation. Misa calls him a “stalker” and a “pervert” over her confinement; L never stops viewing her as his key lead, even after she loses her memories. Misa keeps up a friendly act toward him regardless, at one point kissing him on the cheek purely as a distraction.

Kiyomi Takada

A hostile, jealous rivalry over Light’s attention. Misa sees her as a “stuck-up” threat; Takada, in turn, looks down on Misa as an unpolished “little girl.”

Touta Matsuda and Kanzo Mogi

Her Task Force “managers” under cover identities — Matsuda as “Taro Matsui,” Mogi as “Kanichi Moji,” whom she nicknames “Mocchi.” She treats Mogi with a genuine, if shallow, warmth, often linking arms with him in public to sell their cover.

Gelus

The Shinigami who died protecting her from a stalker before the story begins, and whose notebook Rem later delivers to her.
