Jealous is the Shinigami whose death sets Misa Amane’s entire story in motion. Unlike almost every other Shinigami, he develops genuine feelings for a human he watches from the Shinigami Realm — and breaks the one rule that costs a God of Death its life to save her. Rem takes up his notebook and his devotion afterward, delivering it to Misa in his place.
A small, fragile-looking Shinigami with pale, bone-like skin and an uneven skeletal frame. Thick white bandages wrap the left side of his head and torso, covering his left eye entirely; his single visible right eye is large, round, and dark. He wears no clothing, his body textured like weathered bone or dried skin.
Patient and quietly obsessive — while other Shinigami gamble or sleep away eternity, Jealous spends every spare moment watching Misa Amane from the Shinigami Realm. Compassionate and self-sacrificing in a way almost unheard of for his kind, he never speaks in his on-page appearances, letting his actions carry his devotion instead.
Jealous watches Misa Amane from the Shinigami Realm for an unspecified stretch of time, eventually drawing Rem’s curiosity to what he’s so fixated on. The two witness a distraught stalker corner Misa in an alley, ready to kill her. Recognizing this as her destined moment of death, Jealous impulsively writes the attacker’s name in his Death Note — saving her, but extending her life in the process. Because a Shinigami is forbidden from doing exactly that, Jealous immediately disintegrates into sand and rust. Rem, moved by what she witnessed, claims his notebook and carries it to the human world to give to Misa herself.
Death Note Ownership
Could kill any human by writing their name while picturing their face.
Shinigami Eyes
Could see the names and lifespans of humans on sight.
Realm Observation
Like all Shinigami, could watch the human world from his own realm through portals.
vs. Misa’s Stalker (Ch. 27 / 30, flashback)
Jealous writes the name of a man about to murder Misa Amane, saving her life instantly. The victory costs him his own — extending a human’s life is the one act a Shinigami can’t survive.
Major: Ch. 27, 30 (flashback).
Minor: Ch. 31 (silhouette).
Mentioned only: Ch. 32, 56, 57.
Misa Amane
The human he loved and died to protect. She never learns of his existence until Rem explains it to her.
Rem
The only witness to his death, who takes up his devotion to Misa as her own, ultimately sacrificing herself the same way.
“He spent all his time staring down from the Shinigami realm at a young woman.” — Rem, describing Jealous, Chapter 27
- Often romanized as “Gelus” in early translations; Death Note: How to Read 13 confirms the official spelling as “Jealous.”
- His remaining lifespan transferred directly to Misa when he died, significantly extending hers.
- The notebook Misa uses for most of the series originally belonged to him.
