Hideki Ryuuga is a real, famous Japanese pop idol whose identity L borrows as a shield during his direct pursuit of Light Yagami — enrolling at To-oh University under Ryuuga’s name specifically because it’s a face and name Light already knows. The trick exploits the Death Note’s own rules: writing that name while picturing L kills nobody, while writing it while picturing the real idol would mean murdering an innocent celebrity, instantly proving Light is Kira.
The real Ryuuga is a polished, conventionally handsome idol suited to his celebrity image. When L uses the name as an alias, he makes no attempt to look the part — keeping his own messy hair, dark circles, hunched posture, and plain white shirt and jeans exactly as always.
The real Ryuuga is a successful, publicly admired entertainer, well-known enough that students are shocked to learn a pop idol is also apparently an elite academic. As L’s alias, the persona is really just L himself — using the name to project casual defiance toward Kira, chosen precisely because it’s a name and face Light can’t possibly not recognize.
In 2004, L enrolls at To-oh University as “Hideki Ryuuga” specifically to monitor Light Yagami up close. Both become freshman representatives after matching perfect entrance exam scores, and L introduces himself to Light under the name at the ceremony — leaving Light internally horrified, since killing “Ryuuga” risks either exposing himself or murdering an innocent celebrity. As “Ryuuga,” L challenges Light to a tennis match to study him further; other students note the real idol looks nothing like their classmate. When Misa Amane visits Light and meets “Ryuuga,” her Shinigami Eyes see straight through the alias to L’s real name, exposing the trick to her instantly. Years later, Near reviewing university records finds a “Hideki Ryuuga” among the top students — but no photograph, and no trace of him since.
