Gook

グック

Supporting Death Note

Gook is a background Shinigami who never sets foot in the human world, preferring to watch it from a safe distance and gamble away the centuries with the rest of his kind. He’s the story’s standing example of the “average” Shinigami — lazy, bored, and openly contemptuous of Ryuk for getting attached to a human.

Grotesque and skeletal even by Shinigami standards — a large, elongated skull with deep-set dark eye sockets and a wide, toothy grin, on a long, spindly, bone-like body usually seen crouched or hunched over. No conventional clothing; his physiology is all natural bone-like ridges and structure.

Apathetic, cynical, and quick to mock — Gook gets his entertainment from other Shinigami’s failures and represents the general stagnation of the Gods of Death. He believes strongly in maintaining “Shinigami pride,” and sees Ryuk’s attachment to humans as undignified.

Gook is present when Ryuk drops his Death Note into the human world in 2003, laughing at him for “really screwing up” and losing both of his notebooks. Years later, he watches Earth alongside other background Shinigami, mocking Ryuk for effectively becoming Light Yagami’s pet. When Sidoh later realizes his notebook is missing, Gook observes his search with detached amusement, and remains in the realm long after Light’s death, still watching from a distance during the brief C-Kira incident.

Minor: Ch. 1, 60, 66, 67, 70, 108.1.

Deridovely

A frequent gambling companion — the two are often seen together playing with bones and human skulls.

Ryuk

Finds Ryuk’s apple obsession entertaining but has no respect for his lack of “Shinigami pride.”

Sidoh

Watches Sidoh’s quest for his notebook with mild interest and amusement.

Zerhogie

A fellow gambling associate in the Shinigami Realm.

“Whoops! Hyuk hyuk hyuk! You really screwed up, man!”
“Hey, weren’t you carrying around a second one behind the old man’s back? You sayin’ you lost both?”
  • Serves as the visual representation of the “average” Shinigami — lazy, bored, and addicted to gambling.
  • His elongated, skull-like design was built to contrast with the more humanoid or animalistic looks of the main Shinigami cast.
