Matsuda, Touta

A young man with a lean build, a youthful face, and short black hair in a simple bowl cut with a fringe. Usually in a grey or dark business suit, or full police tactical gear during raids. Known for wide-eyed, expressive reactions and a generally eager, slightly nervous energy that only grows more strained as the case drags on for years.

Honest and Optimistic

Wears his feelings openly, unlike the stoic Aizawa or the cynical L, and genuinely wants the Task Force to be “heroes.”

Driven by an Inferiority Complex

L’s constant dismissals of his intelligence push him into real, dangerous risks — like solo-infiltrating the Yotsuba Group — just to prove he’s useful.

Morally Conflicted

The only investigator willing to admit Kira’s goals are, on some level, compelling — a duality that makes Light’s eventual betrayal land especially hard.

Genuinely Loyal

The one Task Force member who treats Misa Amane as a person rather than a suspect or a tool, forming a real, protective friendship with her.

Matsuda got into the NPA through family connections rather than pure merit, something he admits with some embarrassment. He’s assigned to the Kira case in its earliest days and stays on it, becoming one of the few officers willing to keep working it even after Kira starts targeting police directly. His father is still alive and, by his own account, would be deeply disappointed if Matsuda ever quit the force.

The Early Investigation

One of the original six Task Force members who choose to stay on the case despite the risk, Matsuda is among the first to meet L face-to-face and witnesses colleague Hirokazu Ukita’s death during the Sakura TV incident.

The Yotsuba Infiltration

Feeling sidelined, Matsuda infiltrates Yotsuba headquarters alone and gets caught eavesdropping. L saves him by having him fake his own death — a drunken “fall” from a balcony — and sets him up as Misa Amane’s manager under the alias Taro Matsui, a cover he later risks his life keeping when he becomes bait to lure out Kyosuke Higuchi.

Loyal to a Fault

After L’s death, Matsuda keeps serving under Light as the “New L,” remaining Light’s most vocal defender for years and clashing openly with Near, whom he finds arrogant and unpleasant.

The Yellowbox Warehouse

Once Near proves Light is Kira, a cornered Light mocks his own late father, Soichiro, as a fool. Something in Matsuda snaps: as Light tries to write Near’s name using a hidden scrap of notebook and his own blood, Matsuda shoots the pen out of his hand, then fires several more rounds into him — and has to be physically restrained by his own colleagues before he finishes the job himself.

After the Case

Matsuda stays on the force under Aizawa’s leadership, developing a theory that Near secretly controlled Mikami before the final meeting. In 2013, during the “a-Kira” incident, he goes on live TV to warn the public off buying Kira’s power — an appearance the media largely laughs off, and Aizawa quietly puts him back on desk duty afterward.

Elite Marksmanship

Despite being viewed as the team’s weakest link, Matsuda is genuinely elite with a firearm — precise enough to shoot a pen out of a moving hand under extreme stress.

Undercover Work

Successfully maintains the “Taro Matsui” persona for months without a single slip, fooling both the Yotsuba executives and Misa’s own fanbase.

Standard Detective Training

Capable of following complex data patterns, like tracing the timeline behind Yotsuba’s suspiciously convenient deaths.

Weaknesses

His need for approval and his instinct to believe the best in people make him an easy target for manipulation — exactly what Light exploits for years.

vs. The Yotsuba Group — Infiltration (Ch. 41–43)

Matsuda breaks into Yotsuba headquarters without authorization and is caught eavesdropping, escaping only by faking his own death with the Task Force’s help — proof of his courage, but also of his lack of tactical planning.

The Internal Moral Conflict (Ch. 75–95)

Matsuda repeatedly questions whether Kira is really evil, given the falling crime rate and ending wars. The conflict only resolves once he realizes the killer is his friend’s son — and that friend shows no remorse for it.

vs. Light Yagami — The Final Showdown (Ch. 103)

After Light is exposed and tries to kill Near, Matsuda shoots him down — the man Light always considered the most useless becomes the one who physically ends him.

Soichiro Yagami

His mentor and father figure. Matsuda idolizes his integrity and is more devastated by his death than almost anyone else on the team — and his eventual rage at Light is rooted directly in Light mocking Soichiro’s memory.

Light Yagami

A trusted friend and colleague for six years, and Light’s most vocal defender within the Task Force — until the moment that trust shatters completely.

L (Ryuzaki)

A superior who repeatedly dismisses him as a “potted plant,” fueling the inferiority complex that drives most of his riskier decisions.

Misa Amane

His undercover “charge” as her manager, and the one investigator who genuinely cares about her comfort rather than just treating her as a lead.

Near

Someone Matsuda finds arrogant and unpleasant, frequently clashing with the SPK’s cold, clinical methods.
