Tailor, Lind L.

A middle-aged Western man with sharp, angular features and dark, shoulder-length, slightly wavy hair, seen once on his broadcast in a formal dark suit and tie meant to project the authority of the world’s greatest detective.

His real personality is largely unknown — he’s a condemned criminal reciting a script — but on camera he projects total conviction, denouncing Kira as evil in a stern, authoritative voice. That he agreed to the broadcast at all, on the day of his own scheduled execution, suggests a fairly transactional mindset about his final hours.

Sentenced to die on December 5, 2003, Tailor is secretly recruited by L and Interpol to stand in for the detective on a televised broadcast. Sitting behind a nameplate reading “LIND L. TAILOR,” he claims to be L and directly challenges Kira, denouncing him as a monstrous criminal who will be caught “without fail.” Furious, Light writes his name in the Death Note while watching; forty seconds later, Tailor collapses on camera and dies of a heart attack. Immediately after, the real L’s voice cuts in — represented on screen by a Gothic “L” — revealing the broadcast only aired in the Kanto region, and that Tailor was already scheduled to die that day. The stunt proves Kira exists in Kanto and needs a name and face to kill.

Delivers a scripted broadcast with enough gravitas to briefly convince both the public and Light that he’s the real L.

vs. Kira — The Broadcast Confrontation (Ch. 2)

Tailor challenges Kira on live television; Light kills him almost immediately. A physical loss for Tailor, but a decisive tactical win for L — the broadcast narrows Kira’s location to Japan and proves the notebook needs specific data to work.
