Eiichi Takahashi is generally regarded as the least sophisticated member of the Yotsuba Eight — by his own colleague’s account, included largely to make the rest of the group look smarter by comparison. His wealth and status matter more to him than any of the intellectual games the smarter executives play, but he’s executed just the same once Light cleans up every remaining witness to the conspiracy.
A solidly built 40-year-old with shoulder-length, straight, light-colored hair and a well-groomed mustache, often carrying a relaxed, heavy-lidded expression compared to sharper colleagues like Midou or Namikawa. Dresses in high-end dark suits befitting his VP status.
Greedy and intellectually unremarkable within a group of far sharper minds — Namikawa bluntly says he’s there “to make Kira look smarter.” Motivated almost entirely by wealth and social standing, he shows little moral hesitation about using mass murder for corporate gain, and is frequently seen drinking during the Yotsuba “death meetings,” lacking the discipline of his peers.
The son of Karazo Takahashi, president of the Japan Financial Times, Eiichi rode that media and political influence through Keiyo Business School and into a vice-presidential post at Yotsuba. His hobby outside work is surfing.
Takahashi joins the Yotsuba Eight’s secret weekly meetings in 2004, taking part in deciding which rivals Kira should eliminate for the company’s benefit. He remains a largely passive participant in the group’s strategic deductions once L (as “Coil”) begins investigating, deferring to Midou and Namikawa for anything requiring real thought, though hidden cameras from Wedy’s infiltration still capture his presence at every meeting. After Higuchi’s capture and death, Light regains full ownership of the notebook and eliminates the remaining Eight to erase every witness; Takahashi dies of a heart attack on April 10, 2005, six months after the case closed.
