Mogi, Kanzou

A tall, heavily built man with a broad-shouldered frame, short dark hair in a neat flat-top, and a strong jawline set in a generally stoic, unreadable expression. Consistently dressed in dark professional suits, switching to full police gear during raids. His look barely changes across the entire series — a visual match for his steady, disciplined personality.

Stoic and Discreet

A man of extremely few words, often answering with nothing more than a simple “Yes” — even under intense psychological pressure.

Extraordinarily Efficient

Both his colleagues and L himself repeatedly single him out for how much he gets done, and how fast — capable of processing enormous amounts of data in very little time.

Unshakeably Loyal

His motivation throughout is simple: serve the mission Soichiro Yagami led, out of deep personal respect for him.

An established NPA detective before the Kira case began, Mogi was selected in December 2003 as one of the original members of the Special Investigation Headquarters formed to help L catch the killer.

The Early Investigation

One of the six officers who stay on the case after Kira kills the FBI agents in Japan, Mogi works closely with L during the investigation’s early surveillance phase.

The Yotsuba Arc

Mogi single-handedly compiles a list of over 300,000 Yotsuba employees looking for patterns in the killings — work L specifically praises as “surprisingly efficient.” To get closer to the group, he goes undercover as Misa Amane’s manager under the bubbly alias “Kanichi Moji,” keeping the act up for months. He’s present in the helicopter when Higuchi is captured and the Death Note recovered, touching the notebook and seeing the Shinigami Rem for the first time.

The Mafia Conflict

Years later, Mogi travels to Los Angeles as part of the team facilitating Sayu Yagami’s ransom exchange, then joins the raid on Mello’s hideout — one of the few people inside who survives the explosion Mello sets off to escape, though Soichiro doesn’t.

Near’s Test

In early 2010, Light sends Mogi to meet Near in New York, hoping to use the trip to locate Near or Mello. Near detains him instead, testing the Task Force’s integrity. Mogi stays completely silent for days despite the pressure, ultimately winning Near’s genuine respect.

The Yellowbox Warehouse

Mogi attends the final confrontation, where his own name is written in Mikami’s notebook — and his survival becomes part of the physical proof that the notebook is a fake and Light is Kira.

Data Analysis

The Task Force’s most capable researcher, able to organize and process massive datasets fast and accurately.

Undercover Work

A surprisingly effective actor despite his natural stoicism, maintaining the “Kanichi Moji” persona for months without raising suspicion.

Mogi works undercover as Misa’s manager to gain access to Yotsuba’s inner circle, gathering the intelligence that helps identify the eight executives and eventually leads to Higuchi’s capture.

vs. The American Mafia — Hideout Raid (Ch. 73–74)

Mogi joins the tactical assault on Mello’s base to recover the stolen notebook. The mission succeeds, but Soichiro dies of his wounds shortly after — the most costly outcome of Mogi’s entire career on the case.

vs. Near — The Interrogation (Ch. 80–82)

Detained at SPK headquarters and pressed for information about the “New L” and Soichiro’s death, Mogi says absolutely nothing — proving to Near that he isn’t being controlled by Kira, and earning real respect in the process.

His superior and mentor, and one of the people he’s most loyal to on the entire team — devastated by his death.

Misa Amane

His undercover “charge” during the Yotsuba and mafia arcs, responsible for her safety and surveillance under his manager alias.

A superior who values his efficiency and reliability highly, and says so more than once.

Near
