Gardner is part of the mafia team that helps Mello kidnap Sayu Yagami and ransom her for a Death Note. Once the trade goes through, Near uses FBI records and airport security footage to compile a list of the syndicate’s 108 members, identifying Gardner among them. On November 10, 2009, at exactly 11:59 PM, Light writes every identified name in the notebook at once; Gardner dies of a heart attack along with the rest of the mafia’s leadership and field agents.
