Ooi, Takeshi

尾々井 剛

Supporting Death Note

Takeshi Ooi is one of the “Yotsuba Eight” — the corporate executives who get hold of a Death Note and use it to wipe out business rivals and manipulate the market. Stoic and analytical where some of his co-conspirators panic, Ooi helps steer the group’s strategy right up until Light, newly restored to his role as Kira, executes the surviving Eight to erase every witness to that chapter of the notebook’s history.

A large, physically imposing 43-year-old man, completely bald, with a rugged face and a sharp, prominent jawline. Always dressed in high-end executive attire — dark suits, white dress shirts, silk ties.

Composed and analytical, staying calm through tense strategy sessions where other members of the Eight panic. Driven by ambition and a hunger for wealth and status, with a personal interest in weaponry that hints at a taste for precision and overwhelming force — likely inherited from his father’s military background.

The son of a high-ranking Ministry of Defense official, Ooi graduated from Wasegi University’s law department before building a career at the Yotsuba Group, eventually rising to Vice-president of VT Enterprise.

From 2004, Ooi is a regular at the Yotsuba Eight’s secret meetings, where the executives select rival business leaders for Kira to kill, sending Yotsuba’s stock soaring. When the group realizes it’s under investigation, Ooi backs the plan to hire the detectives Eraldo Coil and Deneuve — both secretly aliases of L — to hunt down and kill the real L first. He’s vocal about what’s at stake, arguing that controlling Kira means the whole group secures unmatched global wealth. After Kyosuke Higuchi, the executive actually holding the notebook, is captured and killed, the secret meetings collapse. In early 2005, once L is dead, Light uses the Death Note to kill the surviving members of the Yotsuba Eight to bury the conspiracy for good; Ooi dies of a heart attack along with the rest.

The Yotsuba Eight vs. L — The Intellectual War (Ch. 37–53)

Ooi and the rest of the Eight try to identify and kill L while using Kira to grow their corporate empire. L infiltrates the group using proxies Aiber and Wedy and identifies the killer among them — a defeat that leads directly to the notebook’s recovery and the restoration of Light’s memories.

vs. Kira — The Purge

Once Higuchi is captured, Ooi becomes a loose end. Light kills him along with the rest of the Eight to erase every witness to the conspiracy.
