Yumi Aizawa is Shuichi Aizawa’s young daughter, and though she has no involvement in the investigation at all, she’s the reason behind one of its most human moments. When L pressures the Task Force to give up their police salaries to keep working the case, it’s the thought of Yumi’s future — her stability, her education — that pushes Shuichi to temporarily walk away.
A small child with a soft, youthful face and short dark hair styled with a simple fringe, like her mother’s. Usually dressed in casual children’s clothing — sweaters, skirts, winter coats — often seen outdoors in a park. By the series’ 2013 conclusion she’s grown into an adolescent, though she barely appears in the later chapters.
Cheerful, innocent, and deeply affectionate toward her father, entirely unaware of the danger surrounding his work. Her innocence functions as an emotional anchor for Shuichi during the most stressful stretches of the case.
In 2003, once L identifies the Aizawa household as one with access to case data, FBI agent Raye Penber is assigned to secretly monitor Yumi and her mother. The following year, during the Yotsuba investigation, L tests the Task Force’s commitment by telling them they’ll have to quit the NPA and lose their salaries to keep working the case. Watching Yumi play in the park while weighing what that would mean for her future, Shuichi is overwhelmed — and, prioritizing her over the investigation, temporarily resigns from the Task Force. She remains part of the family through the end of the series, finally living in a world without Kira’s judgments.
